What We Do in Life Echoes in Eternity

The Pashupati Seal from Harappa Civilization circa 3500 B.C.E. resonates the Indic Civilization. Harmony, respect, co-option manifest in the great horned deity. To serve this ideal in practice is what and who we are. Emblematic of Bharat, Karma, Justice. Imbued with Integrity, Courage, Determination. Through Will, Effort, Sacrifice.

Context | Rationale

We live in increasingly factitious times. The insincere, the artificial, the simulated, the unnatural and the contrived are as much the hallmarks of our age, as are intolerance and co-option imbued in violence, greed, blindness. Mother Earth is home to all life:

animate as well as inanimate. It is the only home we have. For aeons, life has flourished in sync with Nature, until, one rogue species has wrought incredible and incremental destruction. We have obliterated countless life-forms, erased entire species, ecosystems, habitats. Destroyed forever, pristine landscapes. We wreck untold torture on non-humans, as well as humans who adhere to simpler, innocent codes of life. We have, collectively and exceedingly fast, tilted the planet towards impossible-to-salvage doom.

In our own country, as Bharat dies and India rises, we are on the cusp of tremendous decay, destruction and obliteration of this country's way of life; its civilizational values. This is made all the more terrible and leaves one petrified because the inverse view towards Nature is now institutionalized by Government caught in the self-created vortex of mindless and largely questionable, entirely unsustainable development. It is subscribed to and accelerated by the public, which is exceedingly indifferent and belligerent towards Nature. Both of these morbid traits are underlined by stupefied and insensate indifference to everything as long as it does not (in the immediate term) compromise flawed self-interest.

The established mores of our age are exceptionally and collectively mad. At an alarmingly fast and frighteningly furious pace, we in our lifetimes are witness of a complete alteration of most things essential to any civilization: a just, robust, self-sustaining social order, respect for and preservation of Nature, compassion for all life, co-option of all people, a sustainable life-style and self-regulation. Sadly, it is these credos which are being eroded rapidly. We are emerging richer, more arrogant, more aggressive, more self-gratifying. Mindless, unsustainable and destructive growth -- from that of population, to that of decimation of Nature.

Who We Are | What We Do

We are India’s first and only pressure group for Nature and non-humans. Drawn from different walks of life, we are activists. Earth Quotient is a platform on environmental and non-human issues, which is self-sustaining and fed entirely by collective effort. It is viral, driven by technology, networking and collective purpose. A synapse of effort agnostic to geography. EQ collaborates, strategizes, communicates, campaigns, to enforce unpopular but ethical and conservation agendas.

The world forgets that the planet has a carrying capacity, and it is not infinite. And it forgets that non-humans have as much (we believe more) of a right to earth as humans. Earth Quotient applies itself (in the meagre measure which is its scope) to this. It is sharp-focused and it in intense because it does not have the heft to be widespread. We pick our battles. We pick them to make a point and to win the war. Earth Quotient represents the voice of reason, co-option, resistance, voice of the voiceless. It fights the battle of courage and the most hopeless of battles. Even the ones which guarantee defeat; the gallant ones. It will stand for what is right. Constitutionally prescribed and relevant channels, Lobbying, the Media, other Pressure Groups including public opinion, education, activism, litigation. We are agnostic to geography, to political, cultural or religious persuation. Our only loyalty is to Mother Earth.

Why We Do What We Do

The greatest, most important thing a human being ever does, is to see. To see fully and clearly ; and therefore to understand, is the single greatest aspect of being human and being alive. We all live on this planet and we all inherit the earth that others leave behind. By thinking about these issues, it is likely that we become more closely attached to other living organisms and even inanimate objects which constitute habitat or carry sheer intrinsic aesthetic value.

We believe that animals and birds count. Trees count. Rocks count. But all too often we live as if future generations do not count. What will happen if people in the future inherit the mess we leave behind when our time on earth is up? We need to share our lessons with each other, for what people learn will influence how they act and think. It is important to encourage everyone to explore the ways non-humans live, important for all of us to want animals’ lives to be the best they can, and important for you to ask questions and improve how humans treat other animals.

It is important to know that steaks were once cows and buffalos; that bacon was once a live pig, that chickens and fish are social animals and have families just like humans. All of these “dumb” (?) animals were once another’s child, brother, sister, parent. They had lives that were ended so that people could eat them. They were removed from their families, confined in terrible conditions, and killed, suffering all the way. Not one of them wanted to die. Teaching and practicing tolerance unquestionably are good habits to incorporate into our lives.

And our duty as “The Moral Animal”. When human populations show explosive growth all other life, nature suffers or dies. Humans are constantly making decisions for numerous animals. We count, because we are their voice. As the Dr. Jane Goodall says : “The least I can do is to speak out for the hundreds of animals who right now, sit hunched, miserable and without hope, staring out with dead eyes from metal prisons. They cannot speak for themselves.” Because of our dominant position in the world, because we can freely speak and express our opinions about animals, (who do not have any say in the matter), it might seem as if animals exist for humans to use in any way we want. That is not how it should be. Let us remember that animals are not mere resources for human consumption. They are splendid beings in their own right, who have evolved along-side us.

From a purely utilitarian perspective, we know that unlike human and economic capital, natural capital is irreplaceable. The biotic and abiotic components underwriting creation are irreplaceable. It has biological limitations: because it is finite like land for instance or because the biological processes for renewal restrict the rate of replenishment. We appreciate that Nature also provides ecosystem services – a forest in addition to wood, provides water storage, habitat, helps in the regulation of weather and has a vital bearing on climate.

Earth Quotient: Charter

The purpose of this Charter is to provide stakeholders and team members with a,
comprehensive understanding of Earth Quotient (EQ). Specifically, the document is intended to:

Provide a single source summarizing EQ

Provide an understanding of why EQ has been created

Identify what results it should deliver, and

How it shall deliver those results
